The
new Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for the CLC’s
batterer intervention program began airing in Oklahoma City
and surrounding areas in December 2003. The CLC believes
there are batterers that want help, but don’t know
how or where to ask for it; therefore, each PSA is tagged
with the program’s contact information. Batterers wanting
help can call the telephone number on the television screen
and find out where to go to get education and counseling.
Veteran actor, Ed Harris, donated his time and talent to
help the CLC encourage batterers to seek help. According
to Harris, “This collaboration with the Community Learning
Council was intended to help end domestic violence in America.
The approach may be new and unorthodox, because they speak
to the abuser rather than the victim. But when an abuser
seeks help, I think of it as only a positive step toward
eradicating this ongoing nightmare.”
If you are interested in airing the PSAs in your area they are available
to qualified and state certified batterer intervention programs in Oklahoma
and across the country, currently at no cost. To qualify, each batterer intervention
program must meet the required number of weekly and hourly sessions set forth
by their state certifying agency.
